We join in mourning the passing of His Excellency Dr. Festus Gontebanye Mogae, Third President of the Republic of Botswana, a distinguished African statesman whose principled leadership, economic stewardship, and steadfast devotion to democratic governance elevated Botswana’s standing amongst the nations of the world.
A revered servant of the people and a leader of rare discipline, wisdom, and foresight, his immense contribution to Botswana’s stability, prosperity, and international esteem shall remain indelibly inscribed upon the enduring legacy of the nation.
President Mogae shall further be remembered for his appreciation of the enduring place of Africa’s traditional leadership institutions within the architecture of governance and national cohesion.
He understood that the dignity, wisdom, and historical legitimacy embodied by dikgosi and customary authorities remain indispensable to the preservation of cultural continuity and social harmony.
Under his stewardship, Botswana continued to exemplify the harmonious coexistence of constitutional democracy and traditional authority, offering the continent a measured and enlightened model of governance rooted in both modern statecraft and indigenous African values.
On behalf of the United Africa Royal Assembly, and on my own behalf, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, to the Government and People of Botswana, and to the African continent at large, which mourns the departure of one of its most respected sons.
At a moment when Africa continues to seek pathways towards unity, peace, and authentic development, the life and legacy of President Mogae shall endure as a source of inspiration to present and future generations.
May his distinguished soul rest in eternal peace, and may the Almighty grant comfort and strength to all who grieve this profound loss.
